Education & Credentials

Qualifications
I am a Certified Home Inspector, IAC2 Certified Mold Inspector, and member of the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors (Inter NACHI). I have attended over 18 continuing education classes in the last 12 months for more than 132 hours of continuing education credits. I am currently working towards becoming a Certified Master Home Inspector. The highest level you can achieve in our industry. Experience
I have over 38 years of construction experience. In 1972 I became a carpenters apprentice building single-family homes in Southern California. In 1978 I got my general contractor's license and spent the last 10 years of my 24 years as a carpenter framing custom homes. I have built a number of custom homes from the ground up. I started designing custom homes in 1996 and have completed over 180 projects. These projects range in size from 1500 sq. ft. to over 8000 sq. ft. custom homes. I've also designed a variety of room additions, detached garages, and barns. These designs were started from conception, through construction documents, and the permitting process. This is where I got my attention to detail of documentation and report writing skills that are so important to home inspections. In October 2009 I started Shafer Home Inspections where I was mentored by a Certified Master Inspector.
